Hair Loss and Coffee: Is Caffeine Causing Us to Lose Our Hair Faster?
Millions of people love coffee, in fact, most start their day with a cup of joe, but can these indulgences to coffee eventually lead to or cure hair loss? Let’s find out.
Coffee, ah the essential go-to energy source for pretty much anyone needing a perking up on the way to work. Most people I know could not start their day without a cup of coffee. To them, this beloved beverage not only helps to keep them awake and focused, but something that they really do enjoy the taste of.
But what’s the story with coffee and caffeine?
Contrary to some studies that caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee causes hair loss, caffeine actually is beneficial for hair growth. In fact, a study reported in the January 2007 “International Journal of Dermatology” learned that when caffeine was added to a medium in which hair follicles taken from men with androgenetic alopecia were growing, the caffeine stimulated hair growth. They even issued a statement saying that caffeine is a, “stimulator of human hair growth.”
How does this work?
The research was conducted by T. W. Fischer MD, U. C. Hipler PhD and P. Elsner MD. In their experiment, they took biopsies from the scalps of 14 men, who were all in the earlier stages of hair loss. They took those hair follicles and exposed them to solutions that contained different caffeine levels. Furthermore, they also exposed some of the hair follicles to DHT, which is the hormone mainly responsible for hair loss. After a period of 8 days they discovered that all of the hair experienced growth, even the hair that was exposed to DHT.
In 2007, there was another study by the Internal Journal of Dermatology that found that caffeine boosted the length of hairs by 33-40%. The leader of the study, Dr. Tobias Fischer said, “Hair follicles that were treated with caffeine showed a highly significant growth rate at 24 hours, and still showed further significant growth at eight days.”
Not so fast.
The study hair follicle study mentioned earlier concluded that in order to achieve the desired effects from caffeine, one would need to drink approximately 60 cups a day (or 6000mg of caffeine) to stimulate significant hair growth. Since this would be a terrible thing to do for your body and for your overall health, there are instead topical solutions that contain caffeine that can be utilized.
Caffeine can be absorbed very quickly & successfully through our skin, which is why topical solutions that contain caffeine have become very popular. Topical Hair loss solutions such as REVIVOGEN MD Scalp Therapy and TRICOMAX Scalp Stimulating lotion both contain caffeine that blocks DHT and stimulate hair growth.
It would appear that coffee’s energy boosting benefits go beyond the bottom of one’s cup. However, if you are concerned about your hair loss, it is ideal to consult with a trichologist or a hair loss expert who can find out more information about, determine the cause of hair loss and offer you hair loss solutions.
