How to keep your scalp healthy and flake free
DANDRUFF is perhaps the most common scalp condition all year round – and not just because a lot of people are prone to it, but also because the scalp is so often neglected and uncared for!
Remember that the scalp is skin; it has to be thoroughly cleansed, exfoliated and toned just like the skin on the rest of your body in order to be healthy.
The most important of these 3 is to ‘cleanse’ i.e. shampoo – which is something a vast number of people don’t do enough. Think of what would happen if you forgot to wash your face or body daily – it would get pretty gross, greasy and grimy. The same goes for your scalp and hair. Research has shown that a dirty, flaky scalp can exacerbate and even trigger hair loss.
WHAT IS DANDRUFF?
According to UK Board Certified Hair Expert, Dandruff is a common chronic scalp condition marked by flaking of the skin on your scalp. It often occurs when the scalp becomes dry or greasy and produces white flakes of dead skin. Skin cells are formed constantly on the scalp, so the shedding of dead skin cells is a usual process. With dandruff, however, skin cells are shed at a more rapid rate than normal. Oil from the scalp causes the skin cells to clump together and appear as white flakes. Some blame stress or wrong use of products for dandruff, oftentimes, it’s because one does not wash their hair enough.
BUT WHY DOES IT ITCH?
Itching and irritation are caused by an over-growth of bacteria, and often, the pressure of the flakes on the nerve endings in the hair follicles.
DEFENSE AGAINST DANDRUFF
Shampoo Daily. Wash and shampoo hair daily to remove dead skin cells and promote a healthy scalp. Already have dandruff? Drugstore remedies might include shampoos with zinc pyrithione, which targets fungus and bacteria; ketoconazole, which also fights fungus; coal tar and selenium sulfide, which slow the growth and die-off of skin cells on your scalp; and salicylic acid, which loosens flakes so they can be washed away.
Be Wary of Dairy.Dairy products can aggravate dandruff, so steer clear of these if you’re having a flare-up. Add soy or almond milk to your morning coffee(s).
Drink Sensibly.Alcohol can dehydrate your scalp. However, white wine and champagne in particular can irritate flaky & itchy scalps. Never Apply Oil.Against common knowledge, dandruff is oily, not dry. Rubbing oil on the scalp won’t remove dandruff but would it even make it greasier.
Reduce stress. You may have noticed that when you’re irritable and grouchy, your scalp follows suit! Try to relax – stress can elicit dandruff.
If the steps above don’t clear your scalp, or it’s inflamed, you may have a more acute scalp condition, such as psoriasis, pityriasis amiantacia or seborrheic dermatitis. If that’s the case, seeing a Hair Expert would be the best step in addressing the problem. The quicker these are diagnosed, the better!
